Hello there! This is Thanh and I’m so happy to be back sharing my creations with the Sweet Stamp Shop! I’m focusing on some stamping basics today. As we have all levels of stampers here, I thought it would be great to do a review of composition in card making or really, any type of memory keeping layout.
I love making Sweet images the focal point of my cards, but sometimes “placing” the focal point on the layout of the card can be difficult. The overall design of your card is also known as composition:
the nature of something’s ingredients or constituents; the way in which a whole or mixture is made up.
a work of music, literature, or art.
You are arranging your card so that all the different elements of the design compliment each other to have a completed end product.
What is the Rule of Thirds?
It’s actually a fairly easy rule to remember! It’s a composition technique which places your important points of interest on invisible intersecting points and lines which divide the image into thirds both vertically and horizontally. You get a grid that is divided into nine equal parts as seen below:
I’ve made my own horizontal grid out of vellum and using a ruler and a vellum pen, I’ve divided the vellum paper into nine equal parts. I’ve also emphasized the intersecting points with a red marker to really highlight interest points.
When I place the vellum grid over my card, you’ll see that the coffee cup sits perfectly where one of those red dots are and the coffee sentiment is on that horizon.
To tie the card together and give the card some more color, I wanted fill the opposite intersecting point by stamping the word more over and over again in the different colors.
I checked my card over to see if i was on par with the Rule of Thirds by placing my vellum sheet over the front of my card again:
YAY! I finished the card by coloring the Coffee Town images in with Copics and voila, the final product:
I hope that you’ve learned a little something today and be sure to leave me a comment if you have any questions!
