Crackled Watercolor Background

sketchesWelcome to another awesome day of Sketches 2 Ways!  It’s Chrissy and I’m totally excited to share this week’s sketch with you.  I’m not giving you a peek this time around because the current challenge at CAS(E) this Sketch is a 2 week challenge and SO cool, you are going to want to be a part of it.  We paired up with Runway Inspired Challenge to give you twice the inspiration.  What cool make it even better?  Throw in some Sweet Stamp Shop goodness and I just don’t know if I can handle that much excitement…guess I better try!  😉  Here’s the inspiration for my two takes:

RICandCAS(E) Aren’t they perfect together?  So many ideas where running through my head but I knew I wanted to play with some water coloring and when I think watercolor, I think Elegant Flowers and Elegant Sentiments.  These two stamp sets are to DIE for and I find myself turning to them for everything!  Check em out:

elegantflowersweb__93131.1391283403.386.513 elegantsentimentsweb  My first card involves a little inking and a little water coloring.

SSS_S2W_Apr2aI pulled some yellow from the inspiration picture and made it more prominent in this card as my distress inked background.  Then I inked up my stamp with a red distress ink, added a spritz of water, and stamped my flowers all over.  To bring in some of the blue green, I used my water brush to grab some distress ink and flicked it around my paper.  Finally, I wanted some water marks so I simply flicked plain water onto my finished background and dabbed it with a paper towel.  To finish the card off, I added some striped vellum and a strip of glitter paper before stamping and embossing my sentiment.  I love how happy and warm it feels.

My second card uses a different technique to achieve a watercolor looking background with some fun crackling.

SSS_S2W_Apr2bI decided this needed more than just a quick explanation so I made a little video of exactly how this look is achieved.  The two backgrounds turned out a bit different but isn’t that the beauty of watercolor?  I hope you enjoy it!

Thanks so much for joining me today and I hope you liked my two takes on the sketch using Sweet Stamps.  I know you are itching to create and I’m excited to enable you…just a bit!  I have a special coupon for you today.  Just use CS15 for 15% off your entire order, today only!  How awesome is that?  Hopefully, you’ll pick up some fun Sweet Stamp Shop stuff and maybe try a water coloring technique or two.  I’d LOVE to hear what your favorite way to get that watercolor look is.  Let me know in the comments below!  I’m always ready to try something new and fun!

Have a super SWEET day!

So cool, Chrissy! Why did the embossed images crackle? Is it because of the type of ink that you used? Thanks for sharing!

I think it was from over heating the embossing powder, Donna. When the paste crackled, the wet ink just filled the spaces. I’m going to keep playing with it because I love how it turned out.

  4. Super cool technique, missy!! I love the effect that it leaves behind!! Those black leaves are stunning, as well – perfect finishing touch!
